languagesThis is the page for General Language Learning resources. For example, if you know of a language school that teaches multiple languages--put it here!
Epithet and Synonym
About the site This is a professional organisation, working independently and designed to cater for realistic social and cultural interaction, particularly amongst European, American and Japanese people. All are welcome.
It can be found "In world" under "Epithet and Synonym"
The sim is run by Professional linguists, lecturers and academics from the RL whom have a genuine interest in what the platform can offer, whilst giving up some of their spare time to assist others in learning and improving their skills.
Unique? To be learning languages on the internet is a superb way to pick up knowledge whilst gaining exposure to the language being learnt. Certainly, logging on and immediately being amongst the natives is the nearest thing to actually being in that country yourself. Indeed, many people have learnt to speak languages in this way.
What do we offer here?
This is a language and cultural institute. The following classes are taught by RL trained lecturers: Japanese and English.
The Second Life Diploma in Modern Languages:
This is a 12 week course : One hour per week. The aim of this Diploma is to give students the chance to be able to converse at an intermediate level in their chosen language. Lessons are either taught on a one to one basis, or in a class of no more than 12 students. The added benefit of notecard, voice, powerpoint presentation, and email (which are used in between lessons for issues problems etc) are utilized. All lessons are taught by an RL lecturer with 12 years experience in language study and teaching. The option of obtaining a real world reference is available to those whom feel their skills would benefit getting a mention on their resume or CV. Verification of their level is sometimes needed. See Karlingo Lorefield for information in Second life.
Epithet and Synonym :
This is our premier group for general interaction, the group charter reads :
"University of life's social post grads, we enjoy friendly company. Gregarious, indifferent or simply passive....we enjoy talking intelligently, friendship being our preposition"
This is a superb group, full of people whom want to come and chat to like minded people here. The group is used for poem readings, and debates. It is rather popular.
Anybody is welcome to come and use our facilities, as they are all free....It can be found by typing in "Epithet and Synonym" in search...
See our other page in the Japanese section of this web site called "The Japan Centre".

International Schools Island (Mature) - by Linda Smith Tabb
This site is listed as “mature” but it feels like a serious educational site and so far I have not seen anything that I would consider improper content for a minor.
This site is quite interesting and useful for the teaching of foreign languages, my own area of research interest. The site encourages support of “SL in SL” (Second Language in Second Life) and encourages the continuing professional development of the educator. One can subscribe to the “International Schools Group” and use a universal translator.
There is a “Curriculum Tower”. Entering the tower, there is an escalator. At the top of the landing a board can be seen listing ESL, EAL, TESOL and TEFL. To the side is a list of curriculum topics. On the fifth floor is foreign languages. In this area there is a poster for the EduNation II conference May 8 &9, 2009 entitled “SL Languages 2009”. Here is the website for the conference: http://www.theconsultants-e.com/edunation/SLanguages2009.asp
The Modern Languages listed here of interest are Arabic, Esperanto, French, German, Greek, Irish, Italian, Russian, Spanish, Tibetan, and Welsh. There is also a poster listing the “Languages in Second Life, 2007”. This seems to be user languages. They are: English, 39.7%; German, 15.7%; Spanish, 11.8%; Japanese, 9.4%; Portuguese, 5.5%; Italian, 5.3%; and Dutch, 4.9%.
There is another large board with separate languages listed and more information. This board includes a Chinese board section, including Mandarin. There is a powerpoint about languages in Second Life available to download on SlideShare.

Shayan Second Life Language School (Mature) by Linda Smith TabbThis site is listed as “mature” but it feels like a serious educational site and so far I have not seen anything that I would consider improper content for a minor.
When you enter the site there is a white board with flags indicating numerous language possibilities. Lessons available in several languages are available. I chatted with owner Maryam Amoufhaz, who is often online and welcoming visitors to the site. The languages taught at the school are English, Italian, Spanish, French, Portuguese, German, and Arabic. The site is fairly small and limited to the uses of a language school. The décor is classical Greek with Doric columns complete with flames.

Interestingly, the notecard about the site is written in each of the languages taught.
Inside the school there is not much to do. Outside there is a set of white boards. For 4,000 Lindens you can buy a giftcard for four lessons in the following languages: Italian, Spanish, French, German, English, Danish, Russian, and Japanese.
Language lessons are held twice a week in the target language at a price at L$ 500 a week. The courses are held in normal sl-situations, while being part of a group of maximum 4-8 learners.

Thank you for your great comments! I know some of you are learning English. To have the confidence to leave comments here for the public to see is really good. Thank you. The business can not survive without support from others.
