"Epithet and Synonym" Presents :

The Japan Centre (Mature--but seems PG)

The owner and Staff of "Epithet and Synonym" are proud to have been asked to take part in this web site, as the first Japanese based group/ Educator to take part we feel honoured to be given the opportunity.  This website has a professional, clean image that we are pleased to be linked to.

About our Business :

At "Epithet and Synonym" cafe, our resident language tutor, Karlingo Lorefield...whom is a poet, writer, lyricist, literary performer and researcher of Linguistic Morphology in RL.....quite a busy person!  As well as being  heavily involved in the creative arts and co-owner of "Epithet and Synonym" Cafe, he teaches Japanese too.

"The Japan Centre" concept  was founded in June 2007 by our RL Lecturer and Linguist with 14 years experience of teaching and researching Asian Languages.  The founder is also linked to the institute of teaching, and the institute of Leadership and management.  He has also advised a number of prominent RL universities on socio-linguistic aspects of virtual anthropological learning.

Karlingo Lorefield discovered the need for a web based interactive cultural experience in real time, whereby people can have direct cultural interaction, "face to face" tuition and autonomy of learning.   The Japan Centre is designed as a means to providing this exposure as they learn, both socially and culturally.

Japanese Lessons

There are further opportunities for learning Japanese with the Japan Centre, from beginner through to intermediate level.  Private one to one lessons are made available for keen students.  Your teacher, Mr Karlingo Lorefield has an MA in Japanese, and is a trained Lecturer in RL. The School has a number of Japanese mentors on hand to assist in conversational practice.

To join just teleport into the sim or find the groups in Karlingo Lorefields Profile, we are always on hand to assist.

If you are interested in us, it is recommended that you join the "Second Life College of Japanese" group, for lessons.  Or "Second Life Japan Lang.Exchange" See Karlingo's profile in Second Life to join some of his other groups.  We regularly send out information on seminars, charity events, Learning opportunities, and so on.

Lessons are conducted and managed exactly as they would offline.  Email, powerpoint, messenger, email and voice are utilized, the student can choose which of these he/she feels is needed.  In addition, your lecturer is available to provide guidance between lessons.  The only difference is that there is no literal "face to face" contact.

What level can I reach ?

For an example, If you are a beginner student, expect to be brought up to degree level knowledge within about 6 months.  By that time you will have the grammar and ability to construct sentences on this level.  Your speaking and reading ability shall be at Lower intermediate.

If you wish to contact your lecturer please Email : Assertive.Learning@yahoo.co.uk or enter SL and contact Karlingo Lorefield Directly by Instant message.

Kind Regards,

Karlingo Lorefield and Co.

Epithet and Synonym and The Japan Centre.

Waseda SIM (ChaChat! English School) (PG)

Waseda SIM is a virtual campus town set in the future.  The space is basically for Japanese people (students) who would like to socialize as well as study in the context of campus life.  ChaChat! English School is part of Waseda SIM that offers an opportunity to voice chat in order to practice their English speaking skill.  Here, a “real-life” situation would be provided so that students could experience the authentic use of English.

Obviously, this particular space in Waseda SIM can be used for Japanese students to learn English speaking skill, which is usually difficult for Japanese learners of English to acquire.

HOWEVER, advanced Japanese learners can explore this virtual campus in order to get certain information provided exclusively in Japanese (signs, flyers, etc.)  The instructor can assign a project where students are to find certain information provided in Waseda SIM (events, services, etc.) and present it to class in Japanese.

We had the first Japanese class today. The lesson was taught in a very clear manner, with very easy to understand terms and grammar explanations. I appreciate the fact that each student was taken care of, and Professor Tadayoshi made sure that each of us understood correctly what he taught. Nobody was left behind. Wonderful lesson. Looking forward for the next one.

Great class, the lessons are great for those who are serious about learning the Japanese language. I'm a slow learner but even I can move at the pace of this class!

Oh... what else i can tell...
The village is nice place to explore...
When you look around you find small traditional houses in a beautiful landscape all over the SIM.
One of its highlights is the language school where none native japanese speakers are able to learn the japanese language.
Oh... wow... what else can i say... there is so much more to see, to get to know, to explore or simply enjoy.

so best... visite us and take a look around

私はUSAに住んでいて「日本」と言う言葉に引かれて来ました。
懐かしい、とても心休まる場所です。人々も優しく、すばらしい人たちです。ここで色々な人と出会い、その人たちが日本語、あるいは英語に親し目たら本当にすばらしいことです。

Very nice place with likeable and kind people. Lessons are well-structured, easy to understand... But you need to be really motivated in learning japanese. Professor take care of every student to make sure we understand. I'm waiting impatiently the next lesson...

Even though I am a gaijin, I feel extremely welcomed every time I'm in Second Life Japan. The peaceful beauty of the landscape and the warm people that inhabit it give you a nice sense of belonging you don't find very easily. I have made it my home already.

Professor Tadayoshi: Please excuse that i cant really express in english, but i am sure some german people will read it too ;)

Yours, Horsey

When a person can learn and experience another culture without needing to leave there own home is simply amazing. To me this experience is an unique experience to find a place like this so in depth in cultural study in a virtual world. Well done.

I enjoyed my first lesson, I think it would benefit greatly from more vocal participation... I will be ready with a microphone for next time... big thanks to everyone at the Japan Center, this place provides a really great environment for language learning.

I just wanted to say that what you have built here is a wonderful thing. A place for westerners and Japanese to mingle and learn each others' cultures and languages, and help each other in their learning, is a great idea. I hope to attend your language lessons in the future, when my budget allows, but for the moment I have rented a shop and am enjoying spending my time in this sim. I am very shy, so I have not spoken with you yet, but I hope to soon.
Thanks for creating it.

Karlingo has bridged the gap, of space and time. Making it possible to create a mecca of learning and cultural exchange from different points around the world. It is truly amazing that technology today has been able to make this all possible. I am proud, to be included as his close friend and from my own cultural roots. It warms my heart to see it here

Karl's SIM offers a fantastic opportunity to learn or improve the japanese language. I love the occasion to meet native speakers from japan who give useful hints concerning the language and interesting information about japanese habits and culture.

I've only been to one lesson so far, but I am quite impressed with how well it's already gone. I see people already putting together sentences, and the community of the place seems very welcoming and nice to talk to. I look forward to learning more. :D

I'm very happy to have found this place. One can easily get into contact with native speakers and have an excellent class in japanese at times which do not collide with the RL job. And it's so convenient to just sit at home in front of the computer. I can really recommend it.
